You'd be doing me a solid, too - it's a great way to support me and my work at no Navigation Software Object Desktop Your complete Windows customization suite. So thanks for that, Starwatch.įor more news and updates on Overwatch 2 and other games, follow my Forbes blog ! You'll get a weekly round-up email that includes everything I publish. That was enough to put me over the finish line of the premium Battle Pass and unlock that Sigma Mythic skin. After my three Starwatch runs and a few games of Mystery Heroes, I finished enough event challenges to earn a whopping 30,000 XP bonus. In a bubble, Starwatch is enjoyable enough to play through a few times, especially if the Watchers are good enough to overcome the disadvantages of the laser turrets and a feeding Doomfist.Īnd hey, the event’s XP rewards are pretty generous. But when fans have been waiting a long time for the big, story-driven PvE mode and the Watchers and Empire rosters feel a bit out of whack, Starwatch feels like a so-so event that’s not quite coming at the ideal time. I fully support the devs having the chance to let loose and have fun with events. Overall, the event doesn’t quite hang together as neatly as it should. That gives the Watchers the chance to capture the first point or two pretty swiftly and build up an ultimate advantage.Īlso, because the capture points are dynamic (they can be in one of two locations for each of the first few points), defenders who aren’t paying attention to the correct point location can be caught out by a backcapping Watcher. There’s a long trek back to the action on the first two capture points for the defenders, especially if the Watchers can score a team kill and prevent Empire players from reviving their teammates. On the other hand, a decent attacking team has some potential to steamroll the Empire. On top of all that, Empire supports Mercy and Brigitte can heal the turrets. Along with having a Winston, that’s maybe not enough sustained firepower to bust through a solid Sigma-Bastion duo that understands positioning, shield placement and cooldown management.Īnd then there’s Doomfist, the Watchers’ AI-controlled ally who seems to really enjoy diving into the Empire’s faces and providing the villains with a ton of easy ultimate charge. A Mercy-boosted Sojourn or Soldier:76 player with good aim combined with a Bastion and a Sigma shield spells a lot of trouble for a squad that could consist of a Wrecking Ball, Ashe, Torbjorn and Lucio.Īshe and Torbjorn are the only damage options on the rebel side and those who choose the Watchers have to have both DPS heroes in their team.

The Empire side has a formidable lineup of heroes to choose from and a decently organized team of defenders could quite easily squash the rebels. The gameplay aspect of Starwatch feels unbalanced too. Overwatch 2's Starwatch: Galactic Rescue event. But that would be far more compelling than the story of Starwatch, which is unlikely to have long-term lore ramifications. That’s a dark twist for Overwatch that may not necessarily lend itself to a fun limited-time event (even if Team 4 is absolutely talented enough to make that work). It has been suggested that the genetically enhanced gorillas in the lab lured scientists into an airlock then opened it, in turn killing those humans.

I’d like to play through the story of Winston and Hammond escaping from that lab on the Moon and have more clarity on how exactly they were able to do so. There would have been a number of ways to do that and still offer a fun PvPvE mode on Horizon Lunar Colony to tie into the space opera theme. But I would rather have seen the story of Starwatch fit into the broader Overwatch narrative. It’s given the devs and voice actors something a bit different to play around with, sure. This is a non-canonical spin on Star Wars that recasts heroes into odd, unfamiliar roles (Blackwatch characters might have been a more logical fit for the Empire, for instance). The main trouble with that, as Kotaku’s Kenneth Shepard notes, is Starwatch doesn’t advance the actual Overwatch 2 story forward.

That’s a pretty neat incentive for those invested in Starwatch: Galactic Rescue (to give the game mode its full name) and those who enjoyed the first issue of the comic that dropped yesterday to pick a side and help shape the story. The team that gets the most total wins by the end of the event “will determine the fate of the galaxy” in the second issue of an accompanying comic.
